Patch Notes 1.02a
"Mathematics will never be the same."

Introducing Probability 2.0
  • Upgraded probability to include real numbers in the range from 0 to 2.
  • Switching in the monty hall problem is now the same as not switching.
  • Due to high demand, correlation now implies causation.

Graph Theory Features

  • Fixed glitch in the petersen graph so it is no longer a counter-example.
  • Support is no longer offered for hypergraphs.
  • Added a new color to the outdated 4-color theorem. We anticipate at least 7 colors available for planar graphs by patch 1.03.

Number Systems
  • Decimal notation will be phased out next patch. This should fix the long standing bug that 1 = 0.999...
  • Due to loneliness, the set of prime numbers now includes the number 1.
  • Complex numbers have been deemed no longer complex and will now be known as "easy numbers".

Proof Changes

  • Proof by "reference to inaccessible literature" is no longer accessible.
  • A new "proof by picture" widget has been added for mac users.

Miscellaneous

  • Support has been added to allow division by 0 fixing the wormhole bug.

Today's Spiked Math comic is:

Joke Explanation:

The joke lies in combining the Banach-Tarski paradox with a miracle that Jesus performed:

1. The Banach-Tarski paradox is a theorem that basically says a solid ball (in 3-dimensions) can be split into a finite number of non-overlapping pieces, which can then be put back together in a different way to yield TWO identical copies of the original ball. It doesn't work in 1 or 2-dimensions though. Wikipedia has a great picture of this:

2. One of the miracles of Jesus was feeding the multitude. Basically the story has Jesus taking five (or seven) loaves and two fish and feeding thousands of people. Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, "he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children."

I'm a math geek, so I enjoy reading the occasional comic strip that's math related. Here is my list of the top 10 webcomics/comics that I read on a regular basis:

1. Foxtrot - Surely, everyone knows this one. It occasionally has a lot of math humor but is currently on a Sunday only publication schedule.

2. xkcd - Updated every Mon, Wed, Fri, and a very popular webcomic online.

3. Abstruse Goose - Funny webcomic updated regularly, but often physics related as well.

4. Spiked Math - New daily webcomic in color (this should be on the top of the list since I created it ;-))
5. (x, why?) - A funny webcomic, and has over 350 comics published to date.

6. Brown Sharpie - Updated every Mon, Wed, Fri, and can be quite humorous.

7. Brightly Wound - Often contains physics and astronomy as well.

8. twisted pencil - Usually updated Tue/Thu and contains lots of puppets.

9. mathTICS - Usually has some pretty funny strips. Not sure if the author is as active right now and the archive only has the first 100 strips.

10. Indexed - Interesting concept. Mostly consists of venn diagrams and graphs.
